Advanced Placement Overview
The College Board's Advanced Placement (AP) Program offers students the opportunity to pursue college-level studies while still in high school. The students have the opportunity to receive college credits by scoring well on the AP exams. The AP Program offers students stimulating and challenging courses while enhancing high school programs.
The course offerings allow students to explore interests and discover new passions. AP courses can help students acquire the skills and habits they'll need to be successful in college. They will improve writing skills, sharpen problem-solving abilities, and develop time management skills, discipline, and study habits.
Most four-year colleges in the United States give students credit, advanced placement or both on the basis of AP Exam scores.
AP Courses at RHS
AP Biology and AP Calculus are offered at this time. This is subject to change, so please check with the counselor to see what is available.
Scheduling Courses and Registering for the Test
Students interested in taking AP courses must first find out what is being offered and schedule the course during their appointed scheduled time. A student currently taking a course must register for the test by the registration deadline.
AP Testing dates are typically in early May. Testing materials are ordered in mid March. Students taking the test must pay a deposit for the testing materials and pay for the test in full by the testing date or the student will not be allowed to take the test.
Contact the counselor for testing dates and deadlines.
There are fees for each exam. Fee reductions per exam are available from the College Board for students with financial need. Fees may also be waived. Fee waivers are available if a student receives free or reduced school lunches; the waivers must be requested by the student at the time the test is ordered or before. All fees and waivers are to be paid in the RHS Counseling office.
Online AP Classes
Students interested in taking online A.P. classes that are not offered at Roscommon High School or are in an irresolvable conflict in their class schedule should contact the administration for further information. A.P. classes may be taken online only if there is a legitimate conflict with a core academic offering in the schedule.
