Girls On The Run
Running is used to inspire and motivate girls, encourage lifelong health and fitness, and build confidence through accomplishment. Important social, psychological, and physical skills and abilities are developed and reinforced throughout the program. At each season's conclusion, the girls and their running buddies complete a 5k running event which gives them a tangible sense of achievement as well as a framework for setting and achieving life goals. We completed the 5K in Traverse City on the Saturday of memorial day weekend. Pictures is the 3rd - 5th grade group. At Roscommon, we offer this program for girls in grades 3-8.
This year, the girls even got to participate in a service learning project -personal care items for River House Shelter.
Author, Terry Wooten recognized for his poetry came to 4th and 5th grade classrooms to teach a poetry workshop. In the end, students learned how writing began through oral stories of telling, and how writing can develop into a powerful narrative piece of writing by using power words and creating line breaks and stanzas. Pictured, are fourth graders admiring their published pieces of poetry.
